Car and Driver Services

You can hire a car service to pick you up at the airport, to take you back to the airport, or to tour you around the countryside. Many car service companies also offer day trips and tours. If you don't feel comfortable driving, let someone else do the driving for you.

If you are flying into Rome airport, you might want to arrange for a car service to meet your flight. For going into Rome, this is about the same price as a taxi and is a better service. The driver waits for you inside the airport. When you come out of customs, there will be a group of car service drivers with signs; look for the sign with your name. The driver takes your bags and takes you straight to the car.

If you are heading out to another town, you might also consider a car service. This lets you avoid driving in a new country when tired and gives you that extra bit of comfort at the start of a trip. You can pickup your rental car the next day.

Frequently the car rental pickup at Rome airport is crowded, with long waits. This can be hard to deal with when jet lagged. We prefer to either spend the first few nights in the city near the airport (usually Rome or Florence for us), then pickup our rental car there. This also lets you avoid the surcharge for picking up a rental car at the airport.

When you book, be sure to get a phone number for the driver or company, just in case you cannot find your driver. Usually when you book, you do not prepay. Payment is given to the driver. If you want to use a credit card, make sure ahead of time that you can use it. Some companies request payment in cash.

There are many car service, or limousine, companies in Italy. Most serve specific cities or areas. Use Google to search for "car service", "limousine", or "chauffeur" in the city or region you are going to.
